Chinese Industrial Aluminum Profiles Set New Export Record to Europe and North America
Guangdong, China — China’s industrial aluminum-profile exporters have closed the first half of 2025 with an unprecedented surge in shipments to Europe and North America, defying broader metal-trade headwinds. According to preliminary customs data compiled by Shanghai Metals Market, June alone saw 36,800 metric tons of precision-machined extrusions—chiefly 6000-series alloys for automation frames, solar racking and EV battery enclosures—leave Chinese ports for the EU and U.S. markets, a 31 % year-on-year jump .   The spike is being driven by a rare alignment of downstream demand and regulatory tailwinds. In Washington, the U.S. Department of Energy’s US$500 million grant to Century Aluminum for the first new primary smelter in 45 years has not yet yielded additional domestic extrusion capacity, leaving fabricators scrambling for supply . Across the Atlantic, Germany’s Industry 4.0 incentives and Italy’s Superbonus 110 % energy-efficiency program have turbo-charged orders for lightweight, modular framing systems.   Guangdong-based Goomax Group, whose 100,000 tpy mill is now running at 92 % capacity, says European customers now account for 48 % of its order book versus 34 % last year. “We are shipping 40-foot containers of anodized 40×80 mm profiles every week to Rotterdam and Hamburg,” notes export director Lisa Chen. “Each batch carries CE, EN 755-9 and RoHS certificates, plus AI-generated dimensional reports that shorten customs clearance to under six hours.”   Quality premiums are widening. Chinese mills that invested in inline AI surface inspection—such as the Promex CYRUS system showcased at Aluminium 2023 in Düsseldorf—are commanding US$300–350 per ton over standard billet-linked pricing, according to Precedence Research . In contrast, non-certified material from smaller Asian suppliers is being offered at discounts of up to 9 %, revealing a two-tier market.   Logistics innovations are also playing a role. A new weekly block-train service from Shenzhen to Duisburg, launched in May under the Belt and Road framework, has cut transit time to 18 days, matching pre-Covid ocean-plus-truck schedules and slashing carbon footprints by 28 % versus traditional sea freight. Meanwhile, forwarders report that U.S. West Coast congestion has pushed more buyers to East-Coast rail ramps, favoring Chinese suppliers able to deliver FOB Ningbo in 10 days.   Not all indicators are bullish. SMM warns that June’s overall Chinese profile exports fell 27 % YoY as simple architectural sections faced anti-dumping duties . Yet analysts at Grand View Research note that demand for highly fabricated, value-added profiles—those incorporating CNC drilling, bending and powder coating—remains resilient, forecasting an 8.1 % CAGR through 2030 .   Looking ahead, mills are accelerating green-aluminum sourcing. Henan Retop Industry has committed to sourcing 30 % of its billet from hydro-powered smelters in Yunnan by Q1 2026, a move aimed at satisfying forthcoming EU CBAM carbon tariffs. “If we can prove Scope 1 and 2 emissions below 4 kg CO₂e per kg Al, we avoid the €65–85 levy,” says Retop’s sustainability manager Wang Jun.   With European stockists holding only 2.3 weeks of cover—well below the five-year average—and North American lead times stretching to 14 weeks, Chinese exporters are poised for a record third-quarter run, barring any sudden tariff escalation.

Salt-fog testing shows anodized 6063-T5 profiles retain >95 % of yield strength after 1,000 hours, whereas painted mild-steel samples lost 30 % of strength and showed visible rust within 200 hours. Modular design cuts assembly time. Snap-fit T-slot systems reduce on-site labor by 47 % compared with welded steel, according to a Siemens Digital Industries case study on EV battery-pack conveyors. Circularity is becoming a commercial advantage. Profiles containing ≥75 % post-consumer scrap command a US$120/t premium in Europe as OEMs race to meet CSRD reporting deadlines. Market reaction “Aluminum extrusions have moved from niche to norm,” says Erik Johansson, purchasing director at Sweden’s Northvolt. “We now specify 80 × 80 mm aluminum frames for every new gigafactory line because they install three times faster and cut embodied CO₂ by 1.2 kg per meter.” Capacity expansion Responding to the surge, Hydro Extrusions announced a US$180 million investment to add 50,000 tpy of high-strength 6005A capacity at its Székesfehérvár plant by Q3 2026. Meanwhile, China’s Goomax Group is installing Europe’s first AI-guided inline quench system, promising ±0.1 mm straightness on 7 m bars—tight enough for robotic pick-and-place without secondary machining. Outlook Grand View Research projects the global industrial aluminum-profile market will reach US$89 billion by 2030, driven by automation, renewable-energy racking and lightweight construction. “Every kilogram of aluminum replacing steel in framing saves 9 kg of CO₂ over a 20-year service life,” notes IAI chief economist Chris Bayliss. “That equation is simply too compelling to ignore.”
